When speaking of a pit, the psalmists sometimes are referring to a literal pit or hole (for example Ps. 7:15; 9:15).  Other times the "pit" is to be taken figuratively, as a metaphor for the grave (cf. Ps. 30:1, 3, 9; 88:4; 103:4; 143:7).
